Richmond attracts many artist thanks to the highly regarded arts programs at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond. Furthermore, the city has extended open arms to the arts community by supporting theaters, dance and visual arts. Artists have flocked to Manchester for the affordable studio spaces and rich quality of life offered.
The history of Plant Zero Art Center began while scouting for a new home for Glenda Kotchish and Paula Demmert’s Artworks studio spaces, Fountainhead Development found 4 acres, 3 city blocks and 120,000 square feet of warehouse space to serve as an incubator for creativity and culture. This space was then subdivided to house both Artworks and Plant Zero Art Space.
Tom Papa, of Fountainhead, began the concept of an art community with VCU. They wanted safe, clean, workspaces with parking, geared towards the professional artist looking for quiet and exclusive space. In efforts to appeal to the serious academic artist,
Fountainhead partnered with Plant Zero Art Space to build out their space at Plant Zero Arts Center. Some of the first occupants who built the initial culture with academic art and gallery presence were the Heidi Trapeanier, Bill Fisher, Sally Bowring, Richard Roth, Ken Johnson and Myron Helfgott, some of the most sought after members of the Richmond’s art scene.
In efforts to create a true art culture in Manchester the brilliant Richard Roth utilized Solvent Space here at Plant Zero to house a VCU quarterly installation art exhibit which quickly became the big talk in the art community! These exhibits brought in now famous artists such as James Hyde, Margret Blondal, Hope Ginsburg, Katharina Grosse, just to name a few.
